Root-Knot Nematode - Root-knot nematodes produce
specialized feeding structures in the roots of squash and other host plants,
causing changes in the plant cell. These changes produce swelling around the
nematode, causing galls or knots.
Above ground you may see yellowing, wilting, reduced yield, and premature death
of plants. Common practices such as rotation and amending the soil will
suppress root-knot nematodes.
Mosaic- Is sometimes seed born and is spread by striped cucumber beetles and aphids. Symptoms are green vein banding, and distortion of leaves of young seedlings. On mature plants, leaves show a dark green mosaic, blistering, and hardening. Weeds harbor mosaic so keep weeds and brush away from cucurbits. Corn keeps aphids away so planting around cucurbits will suppress mosaic carrying aphids. Get rid of any infected plants immediately.
